ESL’s May 2020 CS:GO Major to be rescheduled to November

A total of $2,000,000 in prize money awarded to the best teams in the world

Cologne – March 23 – ESL today announced that the CS:GO Major in Rio de Janeiro will be rescheduled to November, keeping the Major status and replacing the second Major of the year. In conjunction with Valve, this decision has been reached in light of the global pandemic in the interest of everyone’s safety. The Champions Stage (the playoffs) of the competition will remain at the Jeunesse Arena and will be played on 19 – 22 November. The May Major’s prize pool will be added to the November Major, so the Rio Major will have a $2,000,000 prize pool in total.

“Our decision is an extremely tough one, but health and safety have to take absolute priority”, said Ulrich Schulze, SVP Product at ESL. “Given the very difficult circumstances for live events, we still wanted to give the Brazilian fans the CS:GO Major they deserve. We ask everyone to stay safe and we are pleased to be able to continue to deliver some quality CS:GO esports content to the community during these troubling times, while we prepare the Rio Major for November”.

The tournament will remain a Championship level event in the ESL Pro Tour and count towards winning the Intel® Grand Slam. Tickets purchased for the May date will also be valid for the November date. Fans who do not want to retain their tickets may easily request a refund in their Eventbrite account.
